As extreme weather increasingly leads to longer and more frequent power outages, it is essential to consider backup power options. These options range from portable battery banks and generators to comprehensive whole-house systems. Such solutions are vital for keeping cellphones, medical devices, and other critical appliances operational during outages.

Noah Kittner from the University of North Carolina advises that different conditions, like heat waves and hurricanes, demand specific backup power elements. Portable battery banks, traditional generators, or larger home systems can help depending on the situation.

Portable Battery Banks

Portable battery banks are suitable for charging small devices for limited periods. They cost less than $100 and offer USB ports for easy connectivity. Larger models can power multiple items using traditional sockets and cost a few hundred dollars. However, they are not intended for heavy appliances like air conditioners.

Traditional Portable Generators

Portable generators, powered by diesel, propane, or gasoline, require outdoor use due to harmful emissions. They can power larger items like refrigerators and fans but won’t support an entire home. Generators typically run for 6 to 12 hours, with prices ranging from several hundred to over $1,000, considering maintenance and fuel costs.

“The standard designs for fuel tank capacity are no longer sufficient to deal with multiday outages, which we’re increasingly seeing due to extreme weather,” said Mark Dyson of RMI.

Whole-House Systems

For areas with recurring or prolonged outages, whole-house systems offer a solution. These systems are integrated with the home’s electrical network and activate using an automatic transfer switch. Prices range from $5,000 to over $20,000, depending on size and installation requirements. People dependent on medical devices may find these systems financially justifiable.

Solar and Clean Energy Options

Clean energy solutions like portable solar power stations are growing in popularity. Compact options are affordable and power devices like computers and televisions. More substantial solar stations can cost $3,500 or more. Companies like Jackery, EcoFlow, and Anker offer similar products.

“Our solutions now rival that of traditional gas generators,” commented Rachel Stotts from Jackery.

Rooftop solar installations paired with battery systems provide a more sustainable energy source. Though the initial cost may exceed $20,000, these systems offer long-term benefits and power storage even when the grid is available.

Electric vehicles with compatible features can also serve as a backup power source, feeding energy from the car battery to the home during outages or peak grid demands.

Choosing the right backup power system ensures resilience against outages and minimizes disruption during emergencies.
