Christine Taylor secured a dream role as Marcia Brady in “The Brady Bunch Movie,” but the opportunity came with a challenge. During the “Office Ladies” podcast, Taylor shared the pressure she faced after being cast as Marcia Brady. She expressed feeling “embarrassed” yet agreed to comply, noting it was typical for the industry at the time.
Her journey with Marcia Brady began when she participated in a live show titled “The Real Live Brady Bunch.” Taylor was a lifelong fan, having watched every episode multiple times. Her familiarity with Marcia Brady set the stage for an unexpected call from Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of “The Brady Bunch.” Taylor received this surprising call in the early ’90s, a moment she fondly recalls but regrets not preserving.
In her mind, there was no one better suited for the role than herself. This confidence helped her through the straightforward casting process. Taylor met with the producers and did not need to audition solo again, only reading lines with potential co-stars for her on-screen siblings, Jan and Cindy.
The role, however, came with a condition typical of the 90s film industry. Taylor was asked to lose 10 pounds, despite not being overweight. She accepted this as a necessary part of the job, recalling, “I was like, ‘I’ll lose 10 pounds.’ Of course, I was embarrassed when that request came my way.” She noted that such demands were common and pointed out the challenges of weight fluctuation during filming, evident in different scenes due to reshoots.
Despite the stress of conforming to industry standards, Taylor cherished her time filming the movie. She indulged in treats like nonfat frozen yogurt, a popular choice during that era, as a reward after completing scenes.
