A significant breakthrough has occurred in a decades-old cold case involving the killing of an 8-year-old girl in Chicago in 1960. A former detective from the Chicago Police Department has been identified as the culprit.
Background of the Case
Thomas F. McInerney Jr., who began his career with the Chicago Police Department in 1959, has been named as the killer of Gloria Kowalewicz. Gloria was abducted and murdered while walking to church. Following his initial role, McInerney became a detective handling violent crime investigations until his retirement in 1987.
Gloria Kowalewicz disappeared on November 12, 1960, after leaving her home to attend morning Mass at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. Her body was found hours later in a ditch at a forest preserve southwest of Chicago, having been shot and killed.
Investigation Details
The initial investigation involved interviewing over 1,300 individuals and extensive door-to-door efforts, yet the case remained unsolved for decades. Critical evidence preserved from the crime scene included a bullet, Gloria’s coat, shoes, and a white communion purse with her prayer book. A fingerprint from the purse strap eventually played a key role in solving the case.
With advances in DNA technology and the preserved fingerprint, detectives, in collaboration with the FBI and Illinois State Police, linked McInerney to the crime. McInerney passed away in 2006 at the age of 70, evading accountability during his lifetime.
Further Investigations
Efforts are underway by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to identify any other cases that might have involved McInerney.
Gloria’s parents, unfortunately, passed away without knowing the identity of their daughter’s killer. However, Chicago police express hope that this identification brings closure to those who knew her.
McInerney’s career included work for the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Nevada before retiring in 2004, two years before his death.
