The Colorado State Democratic Party expressed the deep frustration of its members by censuring Governor Jared Polis. This action stemmed from his recent decision to commute the prison sentence of Tina Peters.
Governor Polis, a Democrat, faced significant backlash from his own party on Wednesday night. He had commuted the sentence of Tina Peters, a prominent election denier linked to President Trump. Peters had been serving a nine-year prison sentence for tampering with voting machines.
The Colorado State Democratic Party initiated a grassroots movement involving over 700 Democrats. They sought to formally rebuke Mr. Polis for his clemency decision. The party’s central committee agreed, passing the censure measure with 89.8 percent approval.
Tina Peters was a notable figure among election deniers still incarcerated. Her conviction was related to attempts to prove alleged election fraud involving machines under her supervision during the 2020 election.
Several Democratic leaders in Colorado, along with some Republicans, had urged Governor Polis to deny Peters’ clemency request. Despite her advanced age of 70 and her first-time offender status, they believed Peters remained a threat to electoral processes and democratic principles.
Governor Polis justified his decision by asserting that Peters’ harsh sentence resulted more from her association with election conspiracy theories rather than the gravity of her criminal actions. Eric Maruyama, representing Governor Polis, stated, “Sometimes the right thing isn’t the popular thing with everybody.”
