Comedian Carlos Mencia has entered a plea of not guilty to 12 felony charges related to allegations of not reporting or paying taxes on more than $8 million in earnings. Appearing in a Los Angeles County court, Mencia had his bail reduced from $250,000 to $50,000. He has been in jail since his arrest last Thursday but has since posted bail. It remains unclear if he has been released.
The charges against Mencia include six felony counts of failing to file personal income tax with the intent to evade taxes, covering the years 2019 to 2024. Additionally, there are six similar counts concerning corporate taxes. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman labeled Mencia as “one of California’s biggest tax scofflaws,” asserting he owes over $300,000 in state taxes on income amounting to $8.7 million. If convicted on all counts, Mencia could face over 11 years in prison.
This case marks the first prosecution under the district attorney’s newly established Business Tax Fraud Unit, launched by Hochman in May. Initially from Honduras, born as Ned Arnel Holness, Mencia grew up in East Los Angeles. He began performing stand-up comedy in LA clubs during the late 1980s. By the early 2000s, he garnered significant popularity as a comedian across the United States, dabbling in film and television.
Mencia once hosted a TV series, “Mind of Mencia,” on Comedy Central from 2005 to 2008, blending stand-up with comedy sketches. He continues to perform stand-up shows, touring through clubs and small theaters. However, he missed several performances in Southern California while being held in custody.
