Conor McGregor’s Knee Injury and UFC Return

4 weeks ago 0

Conor McGregor has disclosed the specifics of his right knee injury from his brief engagement at UFC 329 in Las Vegas on July 11. McGregor faced Max Holloway and was defeated by technical knockout. The fighter described the revelation of his injury as “quite shocking.”

“Update: it was acl and meniscus,” McGregor shared on X.

In the welterweight fight in Las Vegas, McGregor noted this injury mirrored a previous injury sustained in an earlier fight against Holloway, though now on the opposite leg. Over a decade ago, McGregor first fought against Holloway before achieving global recognition in mixed martial arts.

Despite the setback, McGregor remains hopeful about his recovery, citing advancements in regenerative medicine and training methods.

“With today’s regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods, it is well within my realm to return by next summer,” stated McGregor.

He added that he no longer requires a crutch and has performed exercises, such as using the leg extension machine, without issue. His recovery progress appears promising, as he can walk without support and activate his quadriceps under resistance.

During the fight against Holloway, McGregor attempted a jumping roundhouse kick. However, upon landing, he immediately grabbed his right knee in pain. Holloway capitalized on McGregor’s vulnerability but despite attempting to fend off punches, McGregor’s condition was evident. Referee Mike Beltran halted the fight within the first round and Holloway was awarded the victory. The co-main event ended abruptly.

Post-fight, McGregor expressed his frustration.

“My head gasket is gone. Destroyed,” he posted on X, explaining his confusion as he had not experienced injuries during training.

Footage from McGregor’s camp showed him practicing jumping roundhouse kicks before the fight with no issues. Despite the unexpected defeat, with his career record standing at 22-7 after this incident, McGregor is determined to return to the octagon and not conclude his fighting career on such terms.
