‘That contradicts our mission,’ he argued. ‘It’s crucial to disclose information that Hernandez didn’t die naturally, wasn’t drug-related, but was stabbed. Understanding what made her vulnerable to be in that situation is important.’

Few medical students aim for careers in autopsies, he noted with laughter, though declaring such intentions made for interesting interviews in medical school. His training included stints at Loyola University Chicago, the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and with Albuquerque’s medical examiner.

Ukpo conducted autopsies on rapper Mac Miller, actor Tommy Lister Jr., and model Kim Porter. Perry’s autopsy revealed acute ketamine toxicity. Ukpo underscored Perry’s case as a key message against viewing ketamine as harmless.
