Controversy Surrounds Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro gained attention at an August 2025 news conference. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation, amid many contentious actions by President Trump and his allies, became a focal point for discussions on corruption and misuse of power.

President Trump announced in April that the Reflecting Pool would be “restored to all its glory” after alleged inadequate management by Presidents Obama and Biden. Cronies were hired via no-bid contracts to install a water purification system and line the pool bottom in American flag blue, with costs reaching $1.5 million. Issues quickly emerged as the liner materials peeled, algae bloomed, and the water turned green, escalating repair costs to over $16 million.

As the 250th July 4 celebration approached, Trump grew worried the project wouldn’t finish in time. The situation escalated on June 19 when former Olympian David Hearn was arrested for property destruction after touching the peeling paint. Trump accused “vandals” of a “350-foot gash” without providing evidence, while secret repairs continued.

Jeanine Pirro supported Trump’s claims with incendiary rhetoric. Often criticized for her aggressive prosecution style, she mirrored Trump’s language. Previously, as Westchester County district attorney, she berated defendants and judges alike. Her connections with Trump included participation in Oval Office meetings.

After unsuccessful bids for New York attorney general and senator, Pirro joined Fox News for 14 years. Her controversial comments, like attacking Muslims, led to Fox’s $787 million defamation lawsuit settlement. Internally, Fox executives referred to her as “reckless” and “insane.” Judges have rebuked her misconduct across various cases.

On July 2, Pirro criticized Hearn’s actions as “unchecked vandalism.” Yet by July 31, she moved to dismiss charges against him, citing contractor flaws in the rush to complete the project. Reports from the Department of the Interior highlighted poor-quality materials and corner-cutting.

Despite her motion including evidence, media outlets did not deeply question Pirro’s dramatic dismissal. Critical questions remain: Did her office investigate after Hearn’s arrest to ensure credible evidence? Did they request crucial materials from the Department of the Interior?

President Trump criticized Pirro, accusing her of “choking” on the dismissal. Trump faces criticism on several fronts, yet refuses to acknowledge errors. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz described the Reflecting Pool situation as indicative of Trump’s presidency.
