Controversy Surrounds Politicians at 9/11 Commemorations

3 weeks ago 0

President Donald Trump, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faced criticism over their conduct at 9/11 memorial events. Observers accused them of inappropriate behavior during these solemn ceremonies.

Controversial Moments at Ground Zero

At Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, a video surfaced showing Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez smiling during the ceremony as names of 9/11 victims were read. Prominent Republicans circulated a Fox News clip of the incident, questioning their suitability for public office.

“How the hell do you laugh while the names of those murdered on 9/11 are being read aloud?” questioned Republican Senator Ted Cruz. Meghan McCain also expressed outrage on social media.

Representative Nancy Mace criticized the behavior on social media as well.

However, a participant in the ceremony, identifying as a “lifelong Republican,” defended Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez. Michael Ragusa, a former New York City Fire Department EMT, claimed the footage showed Ocasio-Cortez greeting the mayor, taken out of context.

“AOC was standing in line, and she waited to greet the mayor appropriately,” Ragusa noted, adding that they remained respectful throughout.

Some relatives of 9/11 victims had urged Mamdani to avoid the events, but Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul supported his attendance. Mamdani participated in the ceremony and shook hands with Rudy Giuliani, New York City’s mayor on 9/11.

Accusations Against Trump at Pentagon Event

President Trump faced scrutiny for possibly closing his eyes during the 25th anniversary commemoration at the Pentagon. Social media users speculated he might have fallen asleep, sharing images of Trump with eyes closed.

The White House denied these claims, suggesting Trump was “solemnly listening” during the event. Critics noted Trump’s past criticisms of former President Joe Biden’s alertness, calling him “Sleepy Joe.”

Memorials Become Political Lightning Rods

These incidents underscore how political tensions intensified during the 25th anniversary of the attacks. At Ground Zero, political speeches are discouraged, keeping the focus on victims and families. Yet, at the Pentagon, both Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed attendees.

Vice President JD Vance joined former Presidents Biden, Obama, Bush, and Clinton at the New York ceremony, where the focus for many families remained on remembering loved ones. The events on September 11, 2001, claimed nearly 3,000 lives and still serve as a poignant reminder for those affected.

Despite the passage of 25 years, the spotlight on political figures during commemorations indicates how small moments can attract significant scrutiny.
