Councilman Gardiner Resigns Amidst Munster Political Turmoil

2 hours ago 0

Munster Town Council has lost a key member as Councilman Chuck Gardiner, representing District 3, unexpectedly announced his resignation. His decision, shared at a council meeting on Monday night, ends his 6.5-year tenure as a councilman and member of the Redevelopment Commission. Gardiner’s resignation takes effect on Tuesday, October 20.

Gardiner, who also held the role of Council Vice President designated for 2026, cited ongoing frustration with politics and internal discord as the reason behind his departure. In his emotional farewell speech, he expressed admiration for the community’s forward-thinking nature and thanked residents and town employees for their support and exceptional professionalism.

“Overall, I have always believed that a community grounded in connection, optimism, and unity is far stronger than one driven by fear and division,” Gardiner stated during his announcement. He highlighted the town’s resilience during major challenges, including the 2020 pandemic and the 2026 EF1 tornado.

Gardiner revealed in a conversation with the Post-Tribune that his decision was influenced by burnout and the upcoming campaign cycle, which he was not eager to face. He plans to submit his resignation to the Lake County Clerk’s office, which will trigger a caucus by the Lake County Republican Party within 30 days to select his successor.

Council President Joe Hofferth expressed his regret at Gardiner’s departure, praising him as a dedicated and effective vice president. Other council members including Dave Nellans and Jonathan Petersen also expressed gratitude for Gardiner’s service. Councilman George Shinkan, another council member, acknowledged Gardiner’s collaborative work approach and vowed to continue similar efforts.

Shinkan, however, took to social media to hint at internal challenges within the council, questioning the divisive influence of an unnamed individual. He urged the community to prioritize unity over personal agendas, maintaining that the town’s integrity should supersede political disputes.

The Town of Munster has experienced a wave of resignations since 2024. Recent changes include the resignation of longtime attorneys Nicole Bennett and David Westland, who cited harassment issues. Following them, Town Manager James Marino retired, and his position was filled by Tricia Abbott. These departures follow earlier resignations of former Town Manager Dustin Anderson and Public Works Director Jill DiTommaso in 2024.

Overall, Gardiner’s resignation is a significant development amid ongoing turbulence within the Munster Town Council.
