Couple Found Dead; Possible Connection to Tom Selleck Scam

1 month ago 0

A heartbreaking incident has emerged from Coachella Valley, where a woman and her husband were found deceased in their home. Media reports suggest the woman may have been targeted by a scam involving a person impersonating actor Tom Selleck.

Donald Whitaker, aged 80, and Karen Whitaker, aged 79, were discovered by Riverside County sheriff’s deputies around noon on Friday. Their deaths prompted an investigation following a wellness check requested by a concerned neighbor. Authorities found the couple with traumatic injuries, and they were pronounced dead on site. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is actively investigating the case.

The couple resided in Bermuda Dunes, an unincorporated golf community east of Palm Desert. As of now, the authorities have no updates regarding the active investigation, and it remains uncertain whether the scam connects to the couple’s deaths.

ABC affiliate KESQ reported insights from Joy Miedecke, a family friend, regarding the scam. Miedecke shared that Karen Whitaker was approached online by someone pretending to be Selleck, known from the CBS drama “Blue Bloods.” This individual contacted Karen through text messages after she posted a memorial for a school friend on Facebook.

“They found her phone number, texted her, and claimed to be Tom Selleck,” Miedecke told KESQ. “They mentioned knowing the memorialized friend, suggesting a shared connection.”

Miedecke reported that the scam led Karen to send money via gift cards, starting at $80 and escalating to $800 increments. The family attempted to curb the financial damage by destroying credit cards and limiting Karen’s bank access.

Despite interventions, Karen struggled to accept the truth. Miedecke noted that even an associate linked to Tom Selleck tried to dissuade her, stating, “Tom Selleck does not do this,” but Karen remained convinced.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has not commented on the scam allegations.
