A Pakistani court sentenced a U.S. citizen and his Pakistani brother-in-law to life imprisonment for the murder of his daughter. The victim, Hira Anwar, a 14-year-old from Yonkers, was lured to Pakistan and killed outside her family home in Quetta in January 2025.
The court ruled the murder premeditated. An investigation revealed that Hira’s father, Anwar-ul-Haq, a naturalized U.S. citizen and long-time Uber driver in New York City, had orchestrated the killing. Initially, he claimed unidentified gunmen were responsible, but officers concluded it was a planned act, involving relatives in Pakistan.
Hira was known for her vibrant personality at Public School 16 in Yonkers. She enjoyed sharing TikTok videos featuring musicians like Zayn Malik and Chase Atlantic. Teachers noted her desire for more freedom and expression. Her social media presence and friendships, especially with boys, were viewed as inappropriate by her father.
Authorities found that Mr. ul-Haq believed Hira’s lifestyle brought shame to his family. This perception reportedly led him to plot her death with the help of his Pakistani relatives. He allegedly deceived Hira into traveling to Pakistan under the guise of a family trip.
