Expect an uptick in coughing sounds in the coming weeks. COVID-19 cases are rising in nearly every part of the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that infections are increasing in all 50 states. As of mid-August, no states are experiencing a decline in cases.
Despite the increase, severe cases remain uncommon. COVID-related emergency department visits are at very low levels. The CDC’s trend tracking indicates virus growth across the country, with no specific estimates available for Iowa.
Wastewater data provides insights into viral activity. Testing sewage can detect the virus even in asymptomatic individuals. According to the CDC, Hawaii and Mississippi report moderate levels of COVID-19, although data for Mississippi is limited. Higher activity levels are observed in the West and South.
Alabama, Alaska, California, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Nevada, Texas, and Washington show low levels in wastewater, while other states have very low levels.
COVID-19 is more prevalent in wastewater compared to other viruses like influenza and RSV. A new vaccine targeting the XFG variant is anticipated to be available in the fall.
