The Orland Park Village Board has approved a $275 million project to expand the Northwestern Medicine campus near Centennial Park. The development will include a cancer office and parking structure.

Board member John Lawler expressed enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing its importance for the aging local population. Lawler highlighted the convenience of receiving treatment locally, rather than traveling downtown.

The private St. George Foundation has donated $225 million towards the construction of this four-story office building and a 484-car parking facility. There is a shared mission between the foundation and the medical center to advance healthcare in the southwest region, according to Northwestern.

The new facility will offer services such as infusion stations, diagnostic imaging, and radiation treatment. Currently, detailed information on the facility’s features is pending, with a hospital spokesperson indicating further details will be released in the upcoming weeks.

Bob Koczwara noted that the expansion will include both the new cancer center and enhancements to existing services. The project is awaiting final state approvals, expected in September, with construction projected to start in the fall and conclude by 2029.

Approved modifications for the building include a reduction in the distance from the wetlands from 50 feet to 30 feet. The building’s maximum height was also adjusted to 51.5 feet from the original 50 feet, and a landscape buffer will no longer be needed on the east side of the lot.

Mayor Jim Dodge considered the adjustments to be minor, seeing the benefits for development. He noted that the addition of this facility, along with the University of Chicago Medical Center’s planned expansion, positions Orland Park as a premier location for top-notch medical care.
