Welcome to our French Open briefing, where each day of the tournament, we bring you the stories behind the headlines.
Women’s Draw Opens Up
On Day 7, the women’s draw saw significant changes. Defending champion Coco Gauff was defeated by Anastasia Potapova of Austria. Amanda Anisimova, the number six seed, lost to France’s Diane Parry, and Madison Keys eliminated Victoria Mboko. This left only four top-10 seeds, with Iga Świątek as the sole former champion remaining.
In the top half of the draw, Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one, and Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, are the only top-20 seeds left. They will face off in the fourth round. Osaka recently won a close match against Iva Jović, while Sabalenka defeated Daria Kasatkina.
In the bottom half, Świątek will meet Marta Kostyuk, while Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic are set to clash. Mirra Andreeva faces Jil Teichmann. Although the men’s draw causes more concern over finalists, the quality of women’s tennis remains high.
Endurance Matches and Marathon Miracles
This year’s French Open is marking itself with enduring battles. João Fonseca, a rising Brazilian star, defeated Novak Djokovic. His victory echoes Roger Federer’s historic upset of Pete Sampras in 2001.
Juan Manuel Cerúndolo of Argentina also emerged victorious after a grueling five-setter against Martin Landaluce, lasting nearly six hours. This match ranks as the third-longest at Roland Garros since 1996. Cerúndolo’s upcoming opponent, Matteo Berrettini, spent over five hours defeating Francisco Comesaña, also in five sets.
Similarly taxing matches included Matteo Arnaldi’s victory and Frances Tiafoe’s comeback from two sets down. On a challenging day, Cerúndolo thanked fans and humorously noted the physical toll on social media.
Moïse Kouame’s Resilient Performance
Moïse Kouame, a 17-year-old, showcased remarkable perseverance. Despite being fresh from a marathon match, Kouame pushed Alejandro Tabilo to four sets. The young athlete demonstrated skills beyond his years and potential for future success.
The French crowd, cheering loudly, supported Kouame throughout. Ultimately, Tabilo secured the win, but Kouame’s performance elevated his ranking significantly.
