Debate Over ICE Shooting in New York: Reactions and Opinions

2 hours ago 0

A recent incident involving a shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has sparked debate. Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic congressional candidate, shared her views on a Twitch stream with Hasan Piker, stating that it “doesn’t even matter” that the man shot, Oscar Belgal, had a criminal record.

Belgal, a 28-year-old from the Dominican Republic, was involved in a shooting during an ICE operation aimed at his arrest. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that he was in the country illegally and refused to follow lawful orders. Both Piker and Chevalier criticized authorities for emphasizing Belgal’s criminal past, arguing that it did not justify the use of force.

New York and federal officials highlighted Belgal’s previous arrests and conviction records. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the shooting details at a news conference, noting that Oscar Belgal had two previous arrests, including robbery and the sale of a controlled substance. DHS added that Belgal had a grand larceny conviction and other arrests, as well as connections to the Trinitarios gang.

Piker stated, “What is the rap sheet for this person that Jessica Tisch is alleging is this criminal, and that the ICE apprehension was valid from that perspective?” Chevalier expressed her frustration, saying, “I was just so angry as I was listening to it.”

Chevalier and Piker both argued that even if Belgal had committed serious crimes, it did not justify the ICE shooting. Chevalier criticized Commissioner Tisch for allegedly trying to “villainize” Belgal.

The NYPD defended Tisch’s statements, asserting that it is common practice to provide criminal history in incident updates. An NYPD representative stated, “We always provide criminal history in incident updates if we have it. It’s also one of the first questions that every media outlet asks the NYPD.”

The incident has led to political reactions as well. The New York State Republican Committee criticized Chevalier’s remarks, suggesting that they are a sign of the Democratic Party’s decline. David Laska, the NY GOP communications director, commented, “The facts of this case are clear: An illegal immigrant and known gang member resisted arrest and was met with lawful use of force from our brave ICE agents.”

This incident has raised questions and discussions on law enforcement practices and immigration policies in the United States.
