Democrats Request Investigation into Freedom 250’s Data Practices

3 weeks ago 0

Democratic lawmakers are urging a federal investigation into whether personal data from Americans attending events for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations could benefit President Donald Trump in the 2026 midterm elections.

Request for GAO Investigation

Representatives Jared Huffman of California and Joe Morelle of New York have requested that the Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigate Freedom 250. This Trump-affiliated organization played a key part in organizing the semiquincentennial events this year. According to Huffman, their request follows an extensive investigation by Democratic members and staff of the House Natural Resources Committee into Freedom 250’s operations and its connections with America250, a congressionally chartered commission.

In a letter to the GAO, Huffman and Morelle expressed concerns over data collected from attendees potentially being used in Trump’s political network. They stressed the importance of ensuring that personal data, collected with taxpayer money, does not influence upcoming elections.

Concerns Over Data Collection

The lawmakers revealed that Americans registering for Freedom 250 events shared personal information such as names, emails, and phone numbers. The data collection process allegedly utilized Campaign Nucleus, a platform owned by former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale. Huffman and Morelle’s letter raised concerns about other companies, like Dyspatchit and Ace Specialties, who possibly accessed attendee details through their services for Freedom 250.

The legislators also worried about attendees being directed to a Trump-related fundraising page hosted by WinRed. They asked the GAO to assess whether adequate safeguards prevent sharing collected information with political groups.

The lawmakers pointed out that this national contact list, if combined with other voter data, could become a crucial political resource for the upcoming elections.

Freedom 250’s Privacy Policy

According to its privacy policy, Freedom 250 collects personal data such as names, email addresses, and payment information. The organization states it may share data with vendors, but not for purposes outside those specified. It also describes security measures to protect stored data.

Huffman and Morelle’s request does not provide specific evidence of data misuse. They seek to determine control over the information and its protection against political exploitation.

The Role of Freedom 250

Former President Trump initiated Freedom 250 in December 2025 as a non-partisan group focusing on the 250th anniversary of American independence. Keith Krach, a former under secretary of state, leads the organization, which is responsible for major semiquincentennial events.

Democrats argue that Freedom 250 marginalized the America250 commission. The organization claims that criticisms of its activities are politically driven.

Differences Between America250 and Freedom 250

America250 is a congressionally established entity that plans and coordinates the nation’s semiquincentennial celebrations. Established by Congress in 2016, it collaborates with the America250 nonprofit organization.

In contrast, Freedom 250, launched by Trump, leads other significant anniversary events and initiatives.

Brad Parscale’s Involvement

Brad Parscale, former digital director for Trump’s 2016 campaign, is the founder of Campaign Nucleus, a Republican-aligned technology platform. Huffman and Morelle’s letter suggests Freedom 250 utilized this technology. This raises concerns about whether event data from government-backed celebrations could merge with political data infrastructure.

House Natural Resources Committee

The House Natural Resources Committee oversees public lands, energy, tribal affairs, wildlife, and aspects of the Department of the Interior. Huffman, the ranking Democrat, has led the investigation into Freedom 250. In July, the committee’s Democratic staff released a report alleging Freedom 250 mishandled federal funding and planning for the 250th anniversary celebrations.
