Detroit Lions Overcome Close Call Against New Orleans Saints in 2026 Season Opener

2 weeks ago 0

The Detroit Lions narrowly escaped what could have been a historical loss in their season opener against the New Orleans Saints. This clash saw the Lions initially in a secure position, only for it to turn competitive in the final moments.

A touchdown from Juwan Johnson with just over a minute left in the game pushed the Saints into a position to tie the game. Only a missed 62-yard field goal attempt by Saints kicker Daniel Carlson as time expired forced the matchup into overtime.

In a tense overtime session, both teams traded touchdowns. Amon-Ra St. Brown scored for the Lions, matched by a score from Saints tight end Noah Fant. Choosing not to settle for a tie, Saints coach Kellen Moore attempted a two-point conversion for the win, but a failed pass, intended for rookie Bryce Lance, sealed the game in favor of the Lions.

The victory, while celebrated, highlighted the Lions’ vulnerability. Had they lost, it would have marked a record-breaking collapse from a 21-point lead for the franchise. However, the win keeps the Lions optimistic for their season in the NFC North.

Despite defensive lapses, Detroit’s offense showcased strength, particularly through running back Jahmyr Gibbs. With David Montgomery no longer in the lineup, Gibbs took center stage, rushing for 156 yards and scoring twice. With five catches, he accumulated 186 total yards, establishing high expectations for future performances.

In contrast, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 410 yards with two interceptions. His main target, Chris Olave, completed 10 catches, earning 182 yards.

As the Lions reflect on their narrow victory, they aim to address defensive issues while leveraging Gibbs’ talents to secure more confident wins in the future.
