Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin highlighted issues with federal judges appointed by President Joe Biden, describing them as challenging to work with during ongoing immigration cases. Mullin made these remarks at the RNC Midterm Convention.
Mullin explained that, generally, the Trump administration finds cooperation with judges, but noted particular difficulty with those appointed by Biden. He also mentioned issues with some judges appointed by former President Barack Obama.
Recent rulings in immigration cases reflect this tension. In April, a judge appointed by Biden blocked the Trump administration from rescinding temporary protected status for Ethiopian nationals. Similarly, another Biden-appointed judge overturned a Trump executive order related to birthright citizenship.
Mullin expressed the view that immigration should be straightforward, comparing it to verifying home ownership. He criticized officials in Democratic-led states for not cooperating with ICE, especially in alleged cases related to violent crimes and terrorism.
It makes absolutely zero sense,
Mullin said, criticizing these jurisdictions.
In addition to dealing with court challenges, DHS also faces opposition from elected officials in cities and states governed by Democrats.
He specifically addressed changes in Virginia, where Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger directed the end of state law enforcement’s cooperation with ICE. Mullin linked 50% of recent deaths in Fairfax County to individuals in the country illegally.
Despite this, Mullin stated that the Trump administration would not impose federal assistance forcibly on these regions but would remain available to support communities requesting aid.
In Connecticut, Danbury’s City Council revised its regulations to allow lawful permanent residents and DACA recipients to become police officers. Mullin criticized this decision, wondering how individuals without legal status could be in law enforcement roles.
I don’t understand how you can be in law enforcement and yet you have no legal status.
Mullin emphasized the importance of lawfulness, contrasting it with lawlessness.
