Astronomers have made a breakthrough in the search for life beyond our solar system by identifying a planet that possesses the key features necessary for habitability. The planet, known as LHS 1140b, exhibits characteristics that are similar to Earth, making it a lead contender in the search for extraterrestrial life.
LHS 1140b is a rocky planet situated within a habitable zone, an orbit neither too hot nor too cold, allowing liquid water to potentially exist. More notably, it boasts an atmosphere, an essential trait for a planet’s habitability.
“At this point, we have absolutely no evidence for life on the planet,” said Collin Cherubim, a planetary scientist from Harvard University. “But we think all of the really important, essential ingredients are there.”
Discovered in 2017, LHS 1140b lies several dozen light-years away, orbiting a cool red dwarf star. Although it is cooler than Earth, its size and mass are greater. The recent findings, published in Science, indicate a helium-rich atmosphere, marking the first clear evidence of a potentially habitable world with an atmosphere.
Sara Seager, an astrophysicist at M.I.T., stated, “When there’s one, there’s more in exoplanets. Hopefully, this is the start of something new.”
The presence of an atmosphere is crucial. It helps retain water, regulates temperature, and shields the planet’s surface from space radiation. While gas giants have been known to possess atmospheres, rocky planets like LHS 1140b are typically harder to detect, leaving scientists uncertain if they too can maintain atmospheres.
This discovery reinforces the notion that there is a population of planets with the potential to support life. Scientists will continue their investigation of LHS 1140b, with the hope of finding more clues to life beyond Earth.
