A Division II football player from Southern Nazarene University (SNU) in Oklahoma has tragically passed away following a severe injury sustained during a game. Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old sophomore at SNU, died five days after suffering the injury, as announced by the university on Thursday.
While specific details regarding the cause of Ulrich’s death are not disclosed, it is known that he suffered a head injury during the game last Saturday. The official statement from SNU Athletics expressed profound sorrow, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our SNU football player, Tyler Ulrich.” The statement also extended condolences to Ulrich’s family, friends, teammates, and all who knew him, urging the community to offer them support in their time of grief.
Dustin Hada, the head coach of the SNU football team, honored Ulrich on social media, describing the young athlete as “a man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous.” Additionally, Ulrich’s father, Mark, took to Facebook earlier on Thursday as his son battled for recovery, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support received. He shared, “Our family is truly blessed to receive all the love and prayers for our young Tyler and we are ever grateful.” Sadly, Tyler passed away at 11:13 a.m. the same day.
The game where the incident occurred experienced a significant delay as medical staff attended to Ulrich on the field. Following the injury, he was transported to a hospital for further treatment. Ulrich was an integral part of the Southern Nazarene University football team, playing his third season with a record of starting 16 of 20 games. This season, he completed six starts and accumulated 36 tackles. In light of this tragic loss, SNU has decided to cancel its upcoming Saturday game against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
