Pete Alonso, a former New York Mets star now with the Baltimore Orioles, thought he had scored his 30th home run in the seventh inning. The game was tied at 3 when Alonso sent the ball soaring along the left field line. He began his run toward first base, believing it to be a fair hit.

The excitement was short-lived when umpires called it foul. This verdict threw both Alonso and Orioles fans at Camden Yards into a state of frenzy. Despite undergoing a review, the umpires did not reverse their decision, stating only that “the call on the field stands.” Orioles’ supporters felt the ruling was unclear and unjust.

Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay observed, “That looks fair,” aligning with widespread opinions suggesting the call was incorrect. Even though the replay presented a challenging decision, emotions ran high, particularly among Orioles’ supporters.

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz voiced his doubts post-game. He referenced the team’s technological tools which indicated the ball had been fair. “In today’s age of advanced technology, it’s surprising we aren’t using AI or comprehensive ball-tracking systems like other sports for such critical decisions,” Albernaz stated. He acknowledged the call wasn’t the sole reason for their loss, but it undeniably impacted the game’s narrative.

The Yankees emerged victorious with a 5-3 win, scoring two decisive runs in the eighth inning. The question lingers—could the outcome have shifted if Alonso’s home run was deemed fair, giving the Orioles a 4-3 lead? The debate continues, reflecting the unpredictable nature of baseball.
