Ebola Outbreak Claims Lives of Children in Congo Orphanage

1 week ago 0

A tragedy has struck an orphanage in eastern Congo where a six-month-old girl has died from Ebola. This marks the third child fatality at the facility, highlighting the rapid spread of a significant health crisis as officials work to manage a quickly growing outbreak.

According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), regional cases have increased by 38 percent over the past week, affecting 32 health zones in eastern Congo. The Ituri province is the epicenter, accounting for over 90 percent of the reported infections.

Efforts to contain the outbreak face several challenges, including community resistance, limited medical resources, and tensions around strict burial protocols.

The latest victim, Vanisa Anifa, succumbed to the virus earlier this week. She was buried in Bigo Cemetery in Bunia under strict safety measures. Only health workers in protective gear were allowed to handle her body.

Orphanage Outbreak Details

Anifa’s death points to a troubling cluster of infections among infants and children in close-contact caregiving environments.

Timeline of the Orphanage Cluster:

  • The Index Case: Initially, a newborn brought to the orphanage after her mother’s death developed a fever and died within days. This case was confirmed as Ebola.
  • Secondary Transmission: A second infant, an orphaned triplet under one year old, also died from the virus.
  • Staff Infections: The virus spread to multiple caregivers at the facility, including a nun.

Public health officials emphasize that infants and young children are especially susceptible to Ebola. The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids, making the care environments in orphanages conducive to transmission.

“She was a baby. She had her whole life ahead of her. Unfortunately, she was taken by the disease,” said Alex Lock, a communications officer at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The Bundibugyo Ebola Strain

Ebola is a severe viral disease causing hemorrhagic fever and is often fatal. The current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda involves the Bundibugyo strain, a variant first identified in 2007.

Unlike the common Zaire strain, which has approved vaccines and treatments, the Bundibugyo strain does not have specific vaccines or antiviral treatments. Medical responses focus on aggressive supportive care.

Primary Symptoms of Ebola:

  • Sudden fever and extreme fatigue
  • Severe muscle pain and weakness
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Impaired kidney and liver function
  • Internal and external bleeding in advanced stages

Outbreak Death Toll

Here are the latest figures (mid- to late-June 2026) from the CDC and Africa CDC:

  • Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC): 896 confirmed cases and 232 confirmed deaths
  • Uganda: 19 confirmed cases, 2 confirmed deaths, and 1 probable death
  • Total (DRC + Uganda): 915 confirmed cases and 234 confirmed deaths

These numbers offer a current overview of the rapidly evolving outbreak as new cases continue to emerge. This article includes reporting from the Associated Press.
