NAIROBI — Health officials are urgently attempting to address an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has resulted in over 2,000 fatalities. The World Health Organization (WHO) suspects the outbreak commenced months before its official recognition.
The latest government data indicates that the outbreak has caused 2,011 deaths and there are 4,381 confirmed cases, as reported by the Associated Press. The fast-moving nature of the outbreak has posed significant challenges for health authorities.
Volunteers, pictured donning protective gear, have been involved in recovering bodies, such as that of a 3-year-old presumed to have succumbed to the virus in June in Bunia, a city in the northeastern region of the country.
