Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, has narrowly triumphed over Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Senate primary. This victory marks a pivotal moment for progressives in this battleground state. El-Sayed is set to contend against Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman, in November, a race that will impact Senate control.
El-Sayed’s primary win was closely contested, with less than a percentage point lead over Stevens out of over 1.5 million ballots. The Associated Press declared El-Sayed the winner after updates in Wayne and Oakland counties indicated Stevens could no longer catch up.
Despite the close race, El-Sayed’s victory signals a significant shift for the Democratic Party. His campaign embraced progressive policies such as ‘Medicare for All,’ reducing military aid to Israel, and campaign finance reform. Support came from prominent progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Rep. Haley Stevens, who had backing from the Democratic establishment, including outgoing Sen. Gary Peters, has pledged her support for El-Sayed. Stevens focused on manufacturing and the economy, emphasizing her track record in challenging races.
El-Sayed presents himself as an anti-establishment candidate, urging Democrats to reject corporate influence. Though not a democratic socialist, he attracted support from members of the group.
Voter opinions varied in this primary. Kenneth Woodside, 87, supported El-Sayed for his approach to tackle oligarchy and authoritarianism. Meanwhile, Nessa Fuller, 51, backed Stevens for her collaborative approach.
Outside influences played a significant role in the primary. Groups supportive of Stevens spent more than $50 million, with AIPAC contributing over $30 million, given Stevens’ strong pro-Israel stance.
The upcoming Senate race remains crucial for Democrats seeking control amidst Trump’s presidency. Party unity will be essential to overcome the Republican financial backing for Rogers.
State Rep. Donavan McKinney also won in Detroit’s heavily Democratic district, arguing for restored Black representation in Congress.
