Europe Endures Intense Heat Wave Affecting Major Cities

Italy issued maximum heat alerts for all major cities Thursday, as Europe confronted a severe heat wave setting records across the continent. Extreme temperatures have soared above 40 Celsius in several countries, prompting health warnings and emphasizing climate change impacts.

Italy’s Nationwide Heat Alert

Italy placed red alerts on all 27 cities under its national heat surveillance system. This action marked the first instance this year of the entire network reaching maximum warning levels. Alerts spanned from Trieste to Palermo, indicating health risks for everyone, not only vulnerable groups.

Authorities recommended that residents and tourists avoid sunlight during peak hours, stay indoors when possible, and drink plenty of water. Tourists found adjustments at popular sites like Rome’s Colosseum, where evening hours were extended, and mist fans cooled entrance areas.

Urban Beach Initiative

Rome introduced a free “urban beach” along the Tiber River, known as Tiberis, in the Marconi neighborhood. This initiative provided shaded areas, swimming pools, and water fountains for residents to escape the heat. Locals appreciated the facility, acknowledging its benefits during extreme weather conditions.

Record Temperatures Across Europe

Slovakia broke its temperature record with 42.2 C recorded at Dolne Plachtince. The Danube’s low water levels severely impacted Slovakia’s largest hydroelectric plant.

Austria also set a new temperature high of 41.2 C in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Drought affected regions received 27% less rainfall than the long-term average, creating unprecedented conditions since 1885.

Power Reductions in Hungary

Hungary’s only nuclear power plant faced significant challenges due to low water levels in the Danube. Plant outputs dropped to 10% of regular capacity, prompting calls for energy conservation.

Authorities requested reduced electricity consumption during peak hours. Major firms and parliament sessions faced reductions to prevent further strain on resources.

Challenges in Germany

Germany faced logistical issues as river water levels continued to fall. Transport Minister Steffen Bilger warned of challenges in shipping and industry while environmental groups called for increased river resilience efforts.

Wildfire and Drought Concerns

In southeastern France, heavy firefighting efforts continued after a significant blaze consumed over 60 square kilometers. Although contained, the fire risk remained high due to dry conditions and strong winds.

England experienced relief with cooling temperatures, yet consequences of the driest July on record were visible, such as a grass fire at Heathrow Airport.

Balkans Experience Extreme Conditions

Balkan countries like Serbia and Croatia faced severe heat and drought. Serbian firefighters combated challenging blazes, while tourists in Croatia sought refuge from the relentless heat, avoiding beaches during peak times.
