A wildfire driven by strong winds and high temperatures has led to the evacuation of thousands in eastern Washington. The Old Trails Fire ignited on Saturday around noon, burning through brush and grass, quickly spreading towards residential areas.
Spokane declared a state of emergency as residents fled their homes, visible flames lighting highways. Officials disclosed that multiple structures have been lost, but the total damage remains unknown as the fire continues to rage.
“We urge residents of Spokane to heed evacuation orders and to stay alert to changing conditions,” stated Courtney James, spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
By Saturday evening, nearly four square miles had been consumed by the blaze. Firefighters reported zero containment due to ongoing winds.
Power company Avista commenced public safety shutoffs, citing elevated fire risk. Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency, noting the combination of high temperatures and winds intensified wildfires across Washington.
The National Weather Service issued a “particularly dangerous situation” red flag alert for the region.
