Five Dead in Ohio River Tragedy

A tragic incident unfolded in Powell, Ohio, where a leisure outing turned fatal. Authorities confirmed that five people lost their lives while attempting to assist a struggling swimmer in the Scioto River on July 20, 2026.

The Delaware County Sheriff, Jeffrey Balzer, provided details at a news conference. The group, initially believed to be fishing, faced the emergency when one member entered the river for a swim. As others attempted a rescue, they too encountered difficulties leading to the tragic outcome.

A 911 call was received from a concerned motorist who observed a distressed child alone on a nearby road, crying out for their mother. This child, part of the group, was instrumental in alerting authorities to the unfolding emergency. Consequently, two children under the age of 10, including the child who sought help, have been placed under the care of family services.

Search and rescue operations were undertaken promptly. Two women were found and pronounced dead at a hospital on Sunday. On the following day, the bodies of three men were recovered from the river, as stated by Tracy Whited, a spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Balzer emphasized the pressing task of notifying the next of kin of the deceased individuals. The tragedy echoes another fatal event that occurred just days earlier, where a sudden flash flood in southern Utah claimed the lives of five family members during a hiking trip.
