France, widely recognized as a powerhouse in football, has shown formidable strength at the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Known as Les Bleus, they have achieved a remarkable feat by scoring at least three goals in each of their first four matches. In their latest game against Sweden on June 30, Kylian Mbappe secured a brace, leading France to a 3-0 victory in the Round of 32.
This performance has solidified the prevailing view of France as a formidable contender for the World Cup title. Competing against them will present a daunting challenge for any team.
Despite this, Lamine Yamal, an 18-year-old talent from Spain, expresses confidence. During an interview with Juanma Castaño for El Partidazo de Cope, Yamal commented, “They haven’t beaten us since the Euros. They can’t be better than us.”
Yamal minimizes France’s dominant group stage, asserting that “the World Cup starts now” with the knockout stage. He acknowledges France’s strong form but doesn’t see a clear favorite. He stated, “It happens to me that when a competition comes up, I think I’m going to win it. So, I think I’m going to win the World Cup this year, and the Champions League is going to be harder for me, because I think we’re going to win the World Cup this year.”
This World Cup marks Yamal’s first appearance for Spain. He scored his debut World Cup goal in their match against Saudi Arabia on June 21. Having recovered from a hamstring injury, Yamal reports feeling 80-90% fit and is ready to play the full 90 minutes for Spain against Austria in the Round of 32, scheduled for Thursday, July 2. With several team injuries, Spain will rely heavily on Yamal’s performance.
Should Spain overcome Austria, their next challenge will be facing either Croatia or Portugal in the Round of 16 on Monday, July 6.
