Kieran Ramsey, representing the Gilman family, shared insights into the release of U.S. Marine veteran Robert Gilman after over 1,660 days in a Russian prison. Gilman is now back in the U.S. and will receive medical and psychological care at a military hospital in Texas.
Ramsey appeared on ‘America’s Newsroom’ to discuss the veteran’s poor health, calling his captivity a ‘nightmare.’ Gilman, Ramsey noted, appears frail in photos released by the White House. ‘He’s very frail,’ Ramsey stated, highlighting the physical toll of his imprisonment.
‘If you’ve seen any of the photos that the White House has since released, you can see just how frail he is.’ – Kieran Ramsey
Gilman, arrested in 2022 for allegedly assaulting a police officer, couldn’t walk off the plane upon his release. Ramsey said he requires comprehensive physical, dental, and psychological treatment. U.S. Marine veterans Trevor Reed and Paul Whelan face similar accusations by Russia. Ramsey called for freeing remaining Americans held overseas.
Massachusetts Democratic Senator Ed Markey, involved in the case, criticized Russia, alleging Gilman faced ‘physical torture, forced medication, and provocations.’ Ramsey emphasized the seriousness of Gilman’s ordeal and noted the ‘over 1,600-day nightmare’ he experienced.
Originally, Gilman traveled to Russia while on his way to Moldova. He fell seriously ill and was subsequently charged with assault. Many view these allegations as unfounded.
Ramsey pointed out a pattern of Russia detaining Americans, particularly ex-Marines, and subsequently adding charges. He stressed the need to repatriate all wrongful detainees, with at least ten more Americans, including five represented by his firm, still in custody.
In the segment, Ramsey thanked former President Trump for assisting in Gilman’s release. He expressed hope for further efforts by officials, including special envoy Steve Witkoff, to secure freedom for Americans still detained abroad.
