U.S. Warns Against Travel to Colombia’s Norte de Santander Due to Security Threats

10 hours ago 0

U.S. officials have issued a warning for Americans to avoid traveling to a specific region in Latin America, citing an increased risk of attacks by armed groups using explosive-laden drones. The U.S. Embassy in Colombia released the advisory concerning the Norte de Santander Department on September 29. This area is situated in northeastern Colombia, near the border with Venezuela.

Terrorism and Armed Conflict Concerns

Americans are advised not to enter the region or to stay within five miles of the Colombia-Venezuela border due to concerns over crime, kidnapping, and ongoing conflicts involving armed factions. A general caution has also been advised for travel to other areas within Colombia.

The Norte de Santander Department faces significant threats from illegal armed groups, as noted in the embassy’s statement on September 29. Among these groups is the National Liberation Army (ELN), recognized as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S.

Drone and Rifle Attacks

As per the embassy’s statement, groups operating in the Catatumbo region have a history of using commercially available drones fitted with explosives, sometimes in combination with rifle attacks, targeting police and military facilities. These groups may launch attacks without warning against various governmental and military infrastructures in the department.

Safety Recommendations for Travelers

Americans currently in Colombia are advised to maintain a low profile and remain vigilant about their environment. Visitors should practice increased caution near police stations, government offices, and military installations and along major roadways. Direct confrontation with armed individuals is discouraged.

Additionally, avoiding large gatherings and demonstrations is recommended, alongside staying updated on security developments through local media.

Colombia’s Ongoing Issues

Colombia is known for its stunning landscapes, bustling cities, and diverse culture. However, challenges persist regarding crime, terrorism, and violence involving illegal armed forces. Despite these concerns, the nation remains a popular destination for international travelers.

In recent months, U.S. officials have also advised reconsidering travel to Colombia due to terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping risks. Earlier in August, a severe earthquake hit western Colombia, causing significant destruction and loss of life, further underscoring the country’s ongoing challenges.
