In Bensalem, Pennsylvania, officials confirmed that no hazardous materials have leaked following the derailment of a freight train on Tuesday afternoon. Initial evacuation and shelter-in-place orders have now been lifted.
The Bensalem Police Department’s statement assured the public that hazmat personnel have deemed the area safe.
Residents can return to their homes and businesses without any threat.
The incident involved 16 freight cars derailing around 2:15 p.m. between Street Road and the Neshaminy Falls train station. Reports by NBC10 and 6abc suggest no hazardous material was involved.
U.S. Representative Brian Fitzpatrick, from Pennsylvania, stated that no injuries have been reported. His office is in touch with local officials, first responders, and the Department of Transportation to handle the situation seamlessly.
Initial concerns of hazardous materials required a one-mile shelter-in-place order. Residents were advised to stay indoors, secure pets, and turn off ventilation and heating systems.
The public was advised to keep away from the accident site, allowing emergency crews unimpeded access.
This incident has drawn attention due to its similarity to the 2020 East Palestine, Ohio, derailment, which highlighted rail safety and hazardous material transport.
