Gary’s New Men’s Shelter Marks a New Chapter

Mayor Eddie Melton of Gary emphasizes his dedication to the city’s revitalization. While focusing on eliminating blight and attracting businesses, Melton underscores the importance of supporting Gary’s vulnerable populations.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Brothers’ Keeper men’s shelter, Melton highlighted expanding services for the homeless as crucial. The event marked the official start of construction on a new $3 million facility, a venture already underway on Washington Street.

Gary officials funded the project with American Rescue Plan Act funds and Community Development Block Grants. Allocating remaining ARPA funds to the shelter was a decision made last year to ensure its development.

The new two-story shelter will cater to homeless men and veterans, featuring dormitory-style accommodation, counseling offices, and communal spaces. It promises 50 shelter beds, doubling the capacity of the existing facility on Broadway. Additionally, the community garden will relocate to the vicinity of the new site, maintaining its connection to the shelter.

City Spokesman Steve Segura likened the partnership between Brothers’ Keeper and the city to steelmaking, emphasizing collective strength. He asserted that interconnected efforts create robust frameworks capable of weathering challenges.

Executive Director Isaac Mootye expressed gratitude and pride in the city’s progress. “I’m beyond happy, very emotional,” Mootye shared, acknowledging the project’s realization as a significant milestone.

Similarly, Gary Common Council President Linda Barnes-Caldwell spoke of hope and renewal. She celebrated the groundbreaking as a symbol of dignity, safety, and opportunity for the community. “This facility represents compassion and a commitment to building a stronger Gary,” she stated.
