Graham Platner emerged victorious in the Democratic primary, overcoming scrutiny about his personal history. His win positions him in a significant race against Republican Senator Susan Collins.
Mr. Platner, known for his progressive platform and oyster farming background, secured the Democratic nomination for Senate on Tuesday. This outcome was anticipated after his main rival, Gov. Janet Mills, ceased her campaign efforts in late April.
Senator Susan Collins, a seasoned politician known for eluding Democratic challenges, will face Mr. Platner in the upcoming general election. In his victory speech, Platner emphasized his movement’s goal to reclaim power and implement progressive laws such as codifying abortion rights and establishing a single-payer health care system referred to as Medicare for all.
Platner dismissed concerns over his past, asserting that the focus should be on the broader movement rather than his personal history. He stated, “In trying to so hard to understand me, they failed to understand that this is not about me at all. This is a movement about us, about the far too many working far too hard and struggling far too much.”
This race is expected to be both costly and contentious, as Maine holds the only Republican Senate seat contested this year where President Trump was defeated in 2024. Democrats aim to capture four Republican-held seats in November to secure a Senate majority.
In the primary, Mr. Platner, 41, led significantly ahead of the other Democratic contenders, Janet Mills and David Costello. As of Tuesday night, with 37 percent of the votes counted, Platner held 72 percent of the vote, compared to Mills’ 19 percent and Costello’s 8 percent.
