The rivalry between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears is one of the most recognized in football. A viral incident added to this heated competition during the Packers’ decisive 31-7 win at Lambeau Field over their NFC North opponent in Week 5.
Packers receiver Matthew Golden returned a punt by the Bears toward the end of the first half. After a 17-yard gain, he ended up running out of bounds on the Chicago sideline. During his full-speed dash, Golden accidentally collided with a Bears coach, who was caught off guard and fell to the ground.
Bears kicker Cairo Santos saw the incident and reacted in a way some fans described as unsportsmanlike. As Golden returned to the field, Santos tried to trip the young receiver before he crossed back onto the field, but the attempt was unsuccessful. The entire sequence, from the collision with the coach to Santos’ attempt, was captured on the broadcast and quickly gained traction on social media.
Fans began debating which action was dirtier, aligning their opinions with their team loyalties. Despite the incident, neither player received a penalty, and the half concluded without further issues.
After the game, Golden acknowledged Santos’ attempt to trip him but chose not to escalate the situation. “Yeah, he did. He did. But it’s all good. I ain’t got nothing to say to him,” Golden commented.
Golden, a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft from Texas, achieved a personal milestone during the game. He caught six passes from quarterback Jordan Love, amassing a career-high 123 yards, including a remarkable 50-yard catch that contributed to Green Bay’s dominant performance.
While Golden maintained his composure, some of his teammates were less restrained. Linebacker Zaire Franklin criticized Bears receiver Luther Burden III, implying that he “didn’t want to play anymore” and “quit today.” This was in response to Burden’s previous statement where he expressed a strong desire for Chicago to defeat the Packers decisively.
The rivalry is set to continue as these division rivals face each other again on Christmas Day in Chicago. The rematch could have significant playoff implications, adding yet another layer of intensity to the longstanding conflict.
After five weeks of the NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings lead the NFC North with a 5-0 record. The Packers, Bears, and Lions are all tied at 3-2.
