The May 26 front-page article titled “Trump’s health drawing scrutiny” highlighted a systemic issue that extends beyond any individual president or political party. This is a concern that affects the broader structure of government transparency and accountability.
Having served for over 25 years in the Navy Medical Corps and spent the latter part of my career at the U.S. Capitol, I was the attending physician to Congress. My experience has instilled in me a profound respect for military medicine. However, there is an inherent conflict in the current process where active-duty officers are publicly responsible for evaluating the fitness of a president. These officers serve within the chain of command of the very patient they are assessing, raising questions about impartiality and objectivity.
This situation raises significant concerns about transparency, as it is akin to accepting an internal audit as the ultimate judgment in any other institution where public trust is crucial. An independent review mechanism might be necessary to enhance the credibility and trustworthiness of the evaluations concerning presidential health and fitness.
