Hugh Laurie Apologizes for Social Media Spat with ‘House’ Critic

3 weeks ago 0

British actor Hugh Laurie recently admitted to being “slightly drunk” when he responded to criticism about the TV show ‘House’ on social media. The incident started when journalist Janet Murray wrote a review of the show, sparking Laurie’s response.

On Monday, Murray shared a screenshot of her article on UnHerd entitled, “What I learnt from my online fight with Hugh Laurie.” Her critique of ‘House,’ in which Laurie starred from 2004 to 2012, triggered a significant reaction online. Laurie addressed the situation with a detailed tweet, offering an apology for any unwarranted attention Murray faced.

Laurie’s Apology

Laurie began his apology by acknowledging the unintended negative feedback Murray received due to his tweet. He explained that he was “very slightly drunk” and dealing with unrelated frustration. Laurie also expressed regret for mentioning cultural icons like Bach and Kahlo, noting it stirred trouble. He humorously remarked on the simplicity and repetition in blues music as a point of reflection.

“I’m sorry if people have been having a go at you because of my tweet. Not at all the plan. I was very slightly drunk and already upset about something that had nothing to do with you.” — Hugh Laurie

Murray responded to Laurie with understanding, noting that “Having a go” might be an understatement but appreciated the apology, stating “no hard feelings.”

The Online Exchange

The initial interaction started on June 6 when Murray shared her perspective on the show’s first season. Murray described the repetitive plot: House facing threats of termination after incorrect diagnoses, followed by a sudden success.

Laurie humorously replied, mentioning their attempts to change the pattern, which resulted in unsatisfactorily short or unhappy episodes.

Laurie’s online exchange with Murray concluded amicably after several days of back and forth. Throughout the conversation, fans witnessed a glimpse of Laurie’s characteristic dry wit, which earned him recognition in comedy shows with Stephen Fry.
