For days, my colleagues and I had been on a quest to verify an intriguing rumor. The gossip suggested Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch closely associated with President Vladimir Putin, had attended Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas this past May. Visual confirmation was the ultimate goal.
We began by pouring over everything the Trumps publicly shared about the event, held on private islands. Pages of tabloid magazines like Page Six and Hello! revealed official photos capturing intimate chapel ceremonies and extravagant beach parties. Guests such as Jared Kushner and Eric Trump appeared in these images, but we found no sign of Kremlev.
Turning to Kremlev’s social media, we discovered something intriguing. On his Telegram account, Kremlev had posted videos over the wedding weekend, seemingly from a tropical locale. In one video, a pivotal detail caught our attention; Kremlev speaks Russian in front of an outdoor patio, with the wicker furniture in the background matching that seen in promotional images of the islands.
The discovery of a pivotal photo uploaded months earlier by a swimsuit model and friend of the bride was groundbreaking. It showed guests in a sunset group shot on a white sand beach, barefoot and smiling among palm trees. Right behind the newlyweds, the head of Kremlev appeared in the back row.
This revelation led to our story, revealing Kremlev secretly funded much of Trump Jr.’s wedding weekend, including renting a private island. Records reviewed by ProPublica and insights from three informed sources confirmed these claims. Surprisingly, Kremlev and associated Russians were absent in official wedding photos, notable for an intimate event with around 50 guests.
Our story rapidly gained attention. The House Oversight Committee’s top Democrat initiated an investigation into Trump Jr.’s connections with Kremlev, requesting communication records and purchases for the wedding by foreign nationals. Trump Jr. remained unresponsive to inquiry on these matters.
As a response, Bettina Trump posted a joint statement with Trump Jr. on Instagram, featuring more photos from the wedding weekend. Their spokesperson acknowledged Kremlev’s wedding payments without disputing them. The press office for Kremlev stated, “Mr. Kremlev and Mr. Trump Jr. have a friendly relationship,” noting the relationship started a few years back.
Despite shared images, the complete story remains elusive. We aimed to provide some context from our findings, acknowledging the importance of what isn’t pictured.
The Setting
The reception party was held on an island rented for around $100,000 per night. Kremlev paid for multiple nights. The islands in the Exumas, a chain of Caribbean destinations with pristine beaches, were hosts to celebrities and executives like Johnny Depp and Bernard Arnault.
The ceremony location shared status as a site featured in films like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Casino Royale.” Though Kremlev did not attend the Friday ceremony, he joined guests for subsequent celebrations on a neighboring island.
The Caribbean-Themed Party
On the second night, additional guests attended a Caribbean-themed party, complete with a Junkanoo band performance. Bettina Trump shared the occasion as an unforgettable night of music and dancing on Instagram.
Kremlev, fresh from a delegation in China with Putin, attended the event. His sanctions by Ukraine implied ties to Russian security services. The couple clarified Kremlev’s payments at the party were a generous gift, not inclusive of the ceremony.
The First Dance
The newlyweds’ first dance, set to “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” took place under disco balls amid palm trees. Bettina wore her wedding dress, capturing the nautical-themed evening with seafood buffets and performers dressed as sailors.
Evidently, Kremlev financed the festivities on both Saturday and Sunday, facilitated through a Dubai entity tied to the International Boxing Association, a group led by Kremlev.
The Fireworks
Sunday’s reception concluded with fireworks over the ocean. Kremlev funded the display, typically costing $70,000. Despite this spectacle, unanswered questions linger: Why did Kremlev fund much of Trump’s son’s wedding?
Frank Montoya Jr., a retired FBI official, offered perspective on political implications, suggesting a future obligation owed by Trump Jr. for the wedding contributions.
