J.T. Poston’s Rough Run at Travelers Championship

2 days ago 0

Golf often challenges even the most skilled players. J.T. Poston experienced this firsthand during the Travelers Championship. Starting strong on the 13th hole with a potential low score, Poston, ranked No. 32 globally, faced an unexpected turn of events.

After reaching the greenside in two shots, he’d hoped for success. Instead, Poston scored a 12, marking a rough patch in his game. This result significantly impacted his standing, contributing to a six-over finish and positioning him 69th out of 72 who made the cut.

Poston began the 13th hole with a solid tee shot landing in the fairway. His next shot found a bunker, which professionals can often handle, given their adept short game skills. A successful bunker shot could have set him up for a birdie on this par-5 hole.

However, complications ensued. Poston’s bunker shot fell short, leading to a challenging chip shot. Golfers know such scenarios aren’t ideal, but par is still possible with a well-executed chip.

The situation worsened as Poston’s fourth shot overshot the green, landing in water. He faced repeated challenges in getting the ball back onto the green, requiring three drops before reaching a putting position on his tenth stroke.

“It’s not really rough where you can kind of blast it out,” Poston told Golfweek. “It looks like you can get enough golf ball on it, which is why I kept trying to hit a good chip.”

Poston explained the reasoning behind his attempts to chip rather than putt from the greenside rough. Concerns included the possibility of his putt losing speed and falling short of the target due to the terrain’s false front. His 11th stroke missed, leading to a tap-in finish for a score of 12, much to the audience’s surprise.

Poston’s struggles continued on the 14th hole, where he scored a double bogey on the par-4. Eventually, Poston ended the day with a 76, capping off his tournament experience.

Meanwhile, the championship progresses to a playoff. Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler, tied at 21-under, will compete further. Scheffler achieved a tie with a putt, and Hovland narrowly missed a potential win putt. Fans await the playoff outcome on Monday.
