Former Senator Joe Manchin is spearheading a new effort to elect independents to Congress. He has transitioned from being a Democrat to an independent, underlining the challenges posed by the entrenched two-party system.

Alongside his daughter Heather, Manchin is launching the Independent Leadership Council. This initiative combines Heather’s Americans Together organization and the Independent Center, a nonprofit committed to studying independent voters.

“This isn’t about forming a third party,” Heather stated. “We’re supporting candidates outside the traditional party lines.”

Manchin’s effort aims to counter the considerable infrastructure and fundraising advantages of major parties.

Strategic Gathering in West Virginia

Approximately 40 individuals, including donors and independent candidates, gathered at West Virginia’s Greenbrier Resort. This venue holds historical significance, featuring a Cold War-era bunker designed for Congressional shelter.

Rep. Kevin Kiley, a California congressman formerly with the GOP, noted the deepening polarization and gridlock in Congress as reasons to explore alternative paths.

Eight independent candidates met face-to-face with donors at the event, emphasizing the trust and actionable plans needed to support independent campaigns.

Data-Driven Approach

The Independent Center is employing AI to pinpoint districts where independent candidates have potential for success. Senior adviser Seth Cohen highlighted the need to demonstrate viable paths to victory for these candidates.

Adam Brandon, another adviser, stressed the importance of winning rather than achieving mere moral victories. With over eight figures in donor commitments, there is optimism for significant candidate support.

Potential Impact and Strategy

No candidates have been officially endorsed yet, but strategic thinking is evident in Heather Manchin’s comments. She stressed the importance of electing even a small number of independents to demonstrate the potential for change.

A Gallup poll indicated that 45% of Americans identified as independents. The initiative seeks to capitalize on this trend by challenging established party practices.

“Most energy in Washington targets blaming the other side,” noted Mike Bridgford, a candidate in Iowa. “Independents can shift this focus.”

Former Rep. Matt Salmon believes independent voices could wield significant influence in a closely divided Congress.
