Joel Castillo’s Remarkable Return to Football

9 hours ago 0

Joel Castillo from Yorkville experienced a life-threatening car accident yet returned to the football field stronger. Last March, while driving on Interstate 88, a tire burst through his windshield. He considers himself lucky to walk away and even luckier to continue playing football.

Castillo, a senior wide receiver and kick returner for the Foxes, has maintained his form since recovering. “I was driving back from a Chicago workout, and the tire came out of nowhere,” Castillo explained.

“It’s incredible that we’re both okay.”

His friend Lincoln Ijams joined him during the accident. The two managed to escape without severe injuries despite a lot of broken glass and bleeding.

Physically, Castillo wasn’t entirely unscathed. He lost a front tooth, broke his jaw, and suffered a severe concussion. This incident cost him class time and hindered summer training. “I faced some serious neck, body, and back issues,” Castillo admitted.

Despite these challenges, Castillo was pivotal in Yorkville’s 21-7 victory over Oswego East. His 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown opened the second half. He later made a crucial 22-yard catch on fourth-and-13, followed by an 11-yard diving reception to secure the final touchdown.

“Coach told me to get to the sticks on that fourth-down play,” Castillo said. “I managed to snag a beautiful pass.” His hunger for the game is undiminished.

Yorkville’s coach, Dan McGuire, praised Castillo as an explosive and fearless player. “He’s invaluable to our team,” McGuire stated.

Currently, Castillo leads Yorkville with 29 receptions totaling 498 yards and three touchdowns. In addition, he has amassed 375 yards on kick returns. “Playing at the next level is my dream, even if recruitment slowed down,” he said.

After the accident, Ijams called Castillo’s mother, Holly, before police contacted her. She found the call terrifying but was relieved that injuries were minor. “We missed several college visits due to surgery and appointments,” she noted. Castillo will need a permanent bridge post-football season.

Coach McGuire’s support ensured Castillo completed his junior year despite the academic setbacks from the accident. “Coach was instrumental in helping Joel finish the year successfully,” Holly Castillo commented.

Castillo and Ijams had trained with a renowned trainer. “I believe that training with the best makes you the best,” Castillo said. He remains incredibly thankful for the opportunity to play football this season.
