High School Football Coach Fired for Unsportsmanlike Conduct

4 hours ago 0

A high school football coach from Oregon, Zach Loboy, has been dismissed after his team, Marist Catholic High School, dominated their rivals, Cottage Grove, with a 63-0 score last weekend. The school decided to terminate Loboy, stating that they needed new leadership to align with their mission and values.

The game saw an unusual move by Loboy’s team: performing an onside kick while already leading 57-0 in the first half. This aggressive strategy, reminiscent of Sean Payton’s onside kick in the 2009 Super Bowl, sparked surprise and criticism. Halftime marked the end of the match, with the game discontinued to protect all participants.

Garrett Bridgens, Cottage Grove’s athletic director, explained that halting the game was in the best interest of everyone involved, prioritizing the welfare of students and fans.

This incident highlights a disparity in strength between the two teams. Cottage Grove, often facing heavy defeats, had a record of being outscored 105-0 in their last three matches. Despite being traditional rivals, their current performances reflect differing capabilities.

The decision to fire the coach raises questions about underlying issues within the team, as such steps are seldom taken solely based on one game’s score. Observations revealed stark differences at the sidelines, with Marist’s team having more substitutes than their opponents.

While high-profile occurrences from the football field regularly make headlines, a coach being fired mid-season for running up the score is rare. The school emphasized the importance of maintaining a supportive and positive environment for players while understanding the challenges posed by the sudden change in coaching.

Marist Catholic High School aims to ensure the team finishes the season strongly, while acknowledging the difficulties that accompany a change in leadership during the season.
