7 days ago 0

Jorge Messi, the father of renowned soccer star Lionel Messi, passed away at a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, at the age of 68. The news was shared by Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys, which mentioned that he had been undergoing treatment for an unspecified illness.

The club praised him as a pillar who supported his son’s career with vision and care, alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini. The South American Football Confederation, CONMEBOL, also offered condolences to Lionel Messi and his family.

Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to a runner-up finish in the recent World Cup, had expressed emotions on the field, attributing his tears to personal reasons. During that time, a statement from the family confirmed Jorge Messi’s health issues but did not specify details. They criticized the media for speculating on private matters.

Jorge Messi, a chemical technician and former steelworker, had played soccer at a youth level with Newell’s Old Boys before leaving the sport for military service. He was instrumental in his son’s successful career, managing his affairs and acting as his agent. He accompanied a young Lionel to Barcelona in the early 2000s, facilitating his entry into La Masia, Barcelona’s youth academy.

Lionel Messi debuted professionally in 2005, eventually winning eight Ballon d’Or awards and leading Argentina to the 2022 World Cup victory. In a 2007 interview, Lionel reflected on the support his father provided during their early days in Barcelona.

Jorge Messi managed his son’s contracts with FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Miami. He also handled the player’s image rights and investments in various sectors, including real estate and hospitality.

In 2013, both father and son faced allegations from a Spanish prosecutor related to concealed earnings from image rights. Jorge Messi resolved these accusations by paying over 5 million euros to cover alleged back taxes and interest.
