Justin Gaethje’s Triumphant UFC Victory and Retirement Speculations

2 weeks ago 0

Justin Gaethje secured an impressive victory at the main event of UFC Freedom 250 in Washington, D.C., defeating undefeated champion Ilia Topuria in a UFC Lightweight Championship unification fight held outside the White House on Sunday. Despite being the underdog, the 37-year-old demonstrated dominance from the beginning. Gaethje inflicted significant damage on Topuria, using effective kicks and punches that eventually led to a stoppage after the fourth round.

An individual from Topuria’s corner decided to halt the fight, acknowledging the damage Topuria had sustained. Topuria left the ring with assistance and later received medical examination at a hospital. Gaethje’s victory crowned him the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion. He didn’t reveal a retirement decision following the fight.

Former UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson suggested that Gaethje should consider retirement after his significant win. On his YouTube channel, Johnson stated, “There is nothing left for Justin Gaethje to do. He should retire on this amazing victory against a legend like Ilia Topuria.” Johnson emphasized the advantage of retiring at the pinnacle of one’s career.

Demetrious Johnson retired in 2023 with a 25-4-1 record after a distinguished career that included time at ONE Championship. He will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on July 9, days before Conor McGregor’s return against Max Holloway at UFC 329.

In a post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Gaethje noted he had promised his mother to decide about his retirement after Sunday. His career record stands at 28-5, with 21 victories by knockout. This win marked his third consecutive victory, with his last defeat suffered against Max Holloway in April 2024. Gaethje has previously lost to elite fighters like Dustin Poirier, Charles Oliveira, and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Some athletes continue competing for the thrill of victory, risking a less dignified end to their careers. For Gaethje, capitalizing on his championship victory as the final chapter could be a wise choice.
