Fans Pay Tribute to Bonnie Tyler in Wales

On Saturday, the streets of a Welsh seaside village were crowded with fans paying their respects to the late singer Bonnie Tyler. Known internationally for her 1983 hit, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Tyler passed away last month at a Portuguese hospital where she was being treated for emergency intestinal surgery. She was 75.

The hearse carrying Tyler’s coffin, draped in a Welsh flag, prompted hundreds of admirers to gather in Mumbles, near Swansea. Many left floral tributes outside her former home, honoring the Grammy-nominated Welsh singer.

Carys Edwards, 18, remarked on Tyler’s connection to Wales, saying, “She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales. Her songs really did touch a lot of people here in Wales; we loved her a lot.”

Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, was a coal miner’s daughter from Skewen, a small village near Swansea. She grew up in a modest household with three sisters and two brothers. Over her career, she earned three Grammy nominations and represented Britain in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 19th.

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II honored her with the Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music, particularly due to the enduring success of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which has been streamed over a billion times, spurred by real eclipses in 2017, 2024, and recently during a solar eclipse.

Tyler also gained fame with songs such as “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” which featured in the “Footloose” soundtrack.

A private celebration of Tyler’s life for family and friends is planned at a church in Swansea. Following this, she will be taken through her hometown of Skewen one last time.
