Kaden Buchmann secured a remarkable victory in the first Bassmaster Elite Qualifier of the season at Norfork Lake in Arkansas. He finished the three-day tournament with a total of 42 pounds, 7 ounces.
The competition did not permit the use of forward-facing sonar, which is generally a crucial tool for anglers. Buchmann had to find a new approach to locate bass, avoiding areas already frequented by over 130 other competitors.
Buchmann’s innovative solution involved observing deer along the shore. The presence of deer indicated that the area had not been disturbed by anglers, leading him to potentially fruitful fishing spots.
Buchmann explained his strategy, saying, “If I saw 15 deer in a pocket, I’d say, ‘I’m getting bit here.’”
His approach proved effective. On the tournament’s opening day, he spotted over 30 deer, including a 9-point buck, and weighed 16 pounds, 7 ounces, taking the lead. Although deer spotting was not his only strategy, it was a useful indicator of less pressured areas.
Throughout the event, Buchmann demonstrated speed, mental toughness, and the ability to navigate away from crowded spots. He covered a vast stretch of the lake, using a combination of topwater bait and skipping jig to target various locations such as docks and shaded shorelines.
On the final day, Buchmann landed four fish from previously unexplored areas, resulting in an opening weight of 16-7, followed by 14 pounds on Day 2, and an additional 12 pounds in the final round. This effort led to a wire-to-wire victory, beating runner-up Cody Stahl by 1 pound, 14 ounces.
Buchmann’s prize was $71,317 and an invitation to participate in the 2027 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell. This victory sets a precedent for creative approaches in competitive fishing while highlighting Buchmann’s adaptability and persistence.
With two Elite Qualifiers remaining, Buchmann’s success story may inspire other anglers to consider deer-watching as a fishing tactic.
