Kennedy Center to Challenge Court Ruling on Name Removal

3 weeks ago 0

A federal judge recently decided that the Washington arts institution must remove President Trump’s name from its facade by Friday. However, the board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts voted to challenge this court order. This decision was made on Thursday, as confirmed by two individuals directly familiar with the meeting.

U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper had concluded that the board lacks the authority to change the name of the arts center on its own. He emphasized that only Congress could modify the name, as the center was dedicated to President John F. Kennedy through a 1964 law. Cooper’s judgment mandated the removal of Trump’s name by the end of the week.

The board, primarily consisting of President Trump’s allies, sees the impending deadline as pressing. They remain committed to appealing the ruling, intending to maintain what they describe as a gesture of respect for Trump’s significant impact on the nation’s cultural center.

As of now, the Kennedy Center representatives have not provided any comment in response to inquiries about the situation. Initially, Trump-affiliated officials at the Kennedy Center had stated their intention to oppose the ruling. They expressed confidence that the court would honor the board’s desire to acknowledge Trump’s notable contributions.
