Ketel Marte Returns to Diamondbacks Despite Controversial Absence

Marte’s Return to the Lineup

Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte made his return to the team’s lineup on Monday after disappearing for two weeks. He rejoined his team, taking on the role of designated hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. Despite his unexcused absence, the team reinstated him in the clean-up spot.

“I’m going to stand in front of my teammates like a man,” Marte stated through a translator, emphasizing his intent to apologize for his actions. He admitted, “We’re human, we all commit mistakes.”

His absence began on August 17 in Boston when he left the team without permission. Initially, the Diamondbacks placed him on the restricted list, before citing knee inflammation as a reason for his absence.

Marte’s Explanation and Previous Incidents

Marte explained his decision to leave as a moment of personal frustration. He took full responsibility, noting, “No one made the decision for me, I’m the one that made it.” He expressed regret about failing to appear, feeling he let down manager Torey Lovullo.

This incident marks the fourth consecutive season that Marte has missed a game without proper authorization. Lovullo acknowledged this pattern openly, raising questions about accountability in professional sports.

Controversy During Injury Period

While Marte was sidelined with injury, videos showed him at Talking Stick Casino in Scottsdale, playing roulette while his team played at home. When questioned, Marte dismissed the optics, saying, “I’ve been injured before; those are things I do in my personal time.” His reaction appeared indifferent to public perception.

Asked if he had a message for Arizona fans, Marte remained silent, shaking his head to indicate no comment.

Team and Contract Dynamics

Despite the controversies, the Diamondbacks are eager for Marte’s return. With their record at 73-65, they are fighting for a Wild Card spot and need his offensive contributions. His contract, extending through 2031 with full no-trade protection, places him in a strong position within the team.

Marte’s return highlights the complexities of balancing talent and accountability in sports.
