3 days ago 0

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell was inactive for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints following the death of his father earlier in the week.

O’Connell shared a photo with his parents on Instagram before deactivating his account. In his message, he expressed deep sadness at losing his father, Jim. He described his father as a positive influence and a great man who impacted many lives.

“It is with immense sadness that I share the passing of my Dad, Jim,” he wrote. “My Dad was a gift to me and to so many others. All who were fortunate enough to know him can testify to the great man he was. He impacted countless lives, and those who knew him were better for it.”

O’Connell stated his family is heartbroken and is seeking comfort and peace through faith. They appreciate the prayers and support they’ve received and ask for continued prayers as they grieve.

In his message, O’Connell referenced the Heidelberg Catechism for solace, quoting, “My only comfort in life and death is that I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Since being drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, O’Connell has appeared in 21 games, accumulating 3,932 yards and 20 touchdown passes. This season he started in the QB3 position following the team’s acquisition of Kirk Cousins and the draft of Fernando Mendoza as the No. 1 overall pick.
