The latest ‘Star Wars’ film, titled “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,” returned to theaters after nearly seven years and drew substantial crowds. According to studio estimates, the movie earned $82 million in ticket sales from 4,300 theaters in the United States and Canada over the weekend. With projections for the Memorial Day holiday, it is expected to reach $102 million domestically and $165 million globally. While the film surpassed opening weekend expectations, it ranks lower among Disney-era ‘Star Wars’ releases. It compares to ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ which garnered $103 million during the Memorial Day weekend in 2018.
The production budget for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ was significantly lower than ‘Solo,’ at approximately $165 million, excluding marketing. This reduced budget increases its potential for profitability, backed by positive audience feedback. The film features Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White, and critics have shared mixed reviews. Despite a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience awarded it an A- CinemaScore. Particularly, boys under 13 rated it highly, giving it an A CinemaScore, and parents rated it a perfect five on PostTrak.
Directed by Jon Favreau, the film stars Pedro Pascal, playing the title character tasked with rescuing Jabba’s son, Rotta the Hutt. The integration with the Disney+ series provides additional context, noting the streaming platform’s infancy at the ‘The Rise of Skywalker’s release. ‘Star Wars,’ under its leadership transition with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan, faces questions about its theatrical appeal.
Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore highlights the film’s scores and parental feedback, suggesting a strong word-of-mouth potential. Meanwhile, ‘Obsession,’ a horror movie by Curry Barker, defied typical box office trends by improving in its second weekend, earning $22.4 million, a notable 30% increase.
Focus Features anticipates the film will accrue $28.2 million by Memorial Day’s end, totaling $58.5 million. It secured second place, surpassing ‘Michael,’ which earned $20 million over the weekend, reaching a $782.4 million total. ‘Passenger,’ another horror release, debuted with $8.7 million and is expected to reach $10.5 million with poor reviews from both critics and audiences.
Boots Riley’s ‘I Love Boosters’ opened with $3.7 million, starring Keke Palmer and Demi Moore. Revenue for the year did not match last year’s Memorial Day weekend led by Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ and ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,’ with this year’s opening at $211 million, a 36% decrease from the previous $330 million.
